Garmin GPS Projects
These two pictures, taken from the computer screen, depict the inaccuracies of the GPS. We used a Garmin receiver to outline the annexes at Mill Creek Valley Middle School as part of a mapping unit. Despite the fact that we walked righ along the sides of the buildings, the GPS path viewed over Google Earth shows some inconsistencies. We knew this going into the project because the Garmin indicated an accuracy margin of error, but to help the students better understand, we reviewed the information as recorded by the Garmin.
At Wamego Middle School, we did something similar, but looked at the accuracy of the Garmin's recording of elevation. We attached the device to a remote controlled car, which was driven on the school drive, a very level area, The Garmin, however, recorded a change in elevation of 31 feet.
Both of these lessons included a basic explanation of how GPS works.
